    With entering the second project year in September 2009, the focus in EFG shifted from the basic groundwork carried out in the first project year to actual development and implementation tasks in the second and third project year. Today, the contributions of partner archives and the development of the front-end of the web portal are in full swing. All activities aim at making film archival material available via a single access point on the internet.

    The Europeana Jigsaw

    Europeana.eu is the multimedia portal which makes collections from museums, libraries, archives and cinémathèques from all over Europe available to the public. In summer 2010, a fully-operational version of Europeana.eu will be released, giving access to over 10 million objects. A dozen of EU-funded projects contribute to this aim, some of them have just started, like Judaica Europeana, which gives access to collections exposing Jewish experience and culture or EUscreen, which builds on the results of Video Active and aggregates television material for Europeana.

    Treasures from the Archives

    Cineteca di Bologna:
    The Chaplin Project

     

    In 1999, the Cineteca di Bologna launched the Chaplin Project in collaboration with the Association Chaplin in order to restore all of Charlie Chaplin's films and to bring them back to the big screen. Over the last ten years, the specialist staff at Cineteca di Bologna's laboratory L'Immagine Ritrovata restored all his works from the First National films, such as “A Dog's Life”, “The Kid” and “Modern Times”, onward. In 2003, the Chaplin Project embarked on the ambitious task of digitising and cataloguing the filmmaker's paper and stills archive with the objective to preserve this invaluable material and to make it available to students, researchers and cinéphiles, thus encouraging further research on Chaplin. The entire corpus of the Charlie Chaplin Archive is available at the Chaplin Research Centre, which is operated by the Cineteca’s library.

    Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema:
    A Collection of “Stolen” Frames

     

    Among its manyfold treasures, the Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema holds a unique collection of oil-cloth albums filled with single film frames, testifying of a a rather unusual and disconcerting method of appropriating and collecting film memorabilia in the 1920s. Clues on how those collections came about were discovered in a film magazine article published in 1932, in which Portuguese film director António Lopes Ribeiro recounts his memories of this daring practice among some Lisbon projectionists and film aficionados.

    In Brief

    On 1 September 2009, the National Audiovisual Archive (KAVA) in Finland joined the EFG consortium, which now comprises 21 partners from 15 European countries. Formerly called Finnish Film Archive, the state institution’s primary motive has been and still is to save and preserve the Finnish film heritage. In 2008, the archive expanded its scope to all audiovisual material, radio programs and television programs, thus changing its name to National Audiovisual Archive.

     

    On 31 December 2009, EFG partner Nederlands Filmmuseum joined forces with three other Dutch film institutions – Holland Film, the Netherlands Institute for Film Education (NIF) and the Filmbank – to form a new organisation, the eye Film Institute Netherlands. With this merger, the Dutch film world has gained a sector-wide umbrella institute that works to support national cinema culture. In 2011 eye will move to its new headquarters, an architectural landmark located along the bank of the Ij, across Amsterdam Harbour.

     

    This year’s edition of the Film Restoration Summer School/FIAF Summer School will start with theory lessons on film restoration via distance learning from 18 May  to 22 June. During the Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival in Bologna (26 June - 3 July), the participants will be able to meet with international specialists before gaining restoration practice during the final two-week internship (5 -16 July). Interested professionals are invited to submit their applications by 9 April 2010.

     

    On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Berlin International Film Festival, film producers worldwide, represented by FIAPF and European film archives, represented by ACE, signed on a framework agreement setting out new arrangements for voluntary deposit of film and film materials in European archives. The new agreement replaces the model contract from 1971.
